Thank you for your interest in becoming a driver educator/instructor. Outlined below is what is required to become a driving instructor.

 

Overview of requirements

To become a driving instructor you must have completed all of the following requirements:

Tests

Letter of eligibility

Instructor training course

Impart knowledge test

Documents and checks

Licence application (RTA form 1001).

Driving instructor application (RTA form 239).

Pass a medical check (RTA form 239).

Pass Police and criminal checks; (RTA forms 1183 & 1184 office use only).

Two specimen signatures.

Four passport size photographs.

Theory test

Pass an extended driver knowledge test on road rules (90 questions).

Letter of eligibility

After all the above documents, checks and theory tests have been completed the RTA will issue you a letter of eligibility. You can not enrol in an instructor-training course unless you hold a current letter of eligibility.

Practical test

Pass a Driving Test with a 95% pass.

A Motorcycle Operator Skill Test (MOST)  with a 100% pass.

Instructor-training course

As from January 2008, new instructors will be required to pass the Certificate IV in Transport and Logistics (Road Transport - Driving Instruction). Certificate IV in Driving Instruction qualifications issued before 31 December 2008 will continue to be accepted, provided the applicant was enrolled in the course prior to 31 December 2007.

Impart knowledge test

After you have passed the instructor-training course you are required to pass an impart knowledge test in the type of vehicle you want to be licensed to instruct in. During the tests you are required to demonstrate the knowledge, skills and driving behaviours expected of a professional driving instructor. The test includes; presenting lessons, demonstration of safe driving, a commentary drive and various manoeuvres.

After you have passed the impart knowledge test and paid the licence fee you will be issued with a driving instructor licence, which is valid for 5 years.

Fees

Fees are payable to the RTA for the:

DKT (driver knowledge test).

Driving Test / MOST (motorcycle operator skill test).

Pre-learner rider training course (motorcycle instructors only).

Impart knowledge test (N/A for motorcycle instructors).

Issuing of a 5 year driving instructor licence.

Fees for the instructor-training course are determined by the course providers and are paid directly to them.

Other fees such as those payable to medical practitioners for the medical check are the responsibility of the licence applicant.

Applicants are required to supply the vehicle for all driving tests and assessments.               

 

 

TT Driver Training in conjunction with DARE (Driver and Rider Education), provides you with your one-on-one training. You must enroll with DARE for your instructor training course as they are the registered provider. Contact 1800 111 424 or email them on achieve@DARE.nsw.edu.au Total cost of the home-based course is $3575 and is subject to change, price is set by DARE. On enrollment you need to advise that TT Driver Training referred you for enrolment and Todd will conduct your practical tuition.

 

Once your enrolment is complete your training can commence immediately dependant on our current booking availabilities. Students who complete their training with TT Driver Training may be offered a sub-contractor position (hours vary, on customers demand) on successful completion of the course.

 

TT instructors are paid $40p/h using their own vehicle during business hours. After hours you will earn an additional $5p/h mon-fri after 5.00pm and sat after 12pm. Sunday lessons you will receive an additional $12p/h. TT will provide your work uniform (outlined in full later), car signage, business cards and refer-a-friend cards. An example of other things TT likes to provide for their instructors during the year is Golf Day, tickets to the business awards for you and your partner (TT has been a finalist the past two years), massage treatments etc, provided on work performance.
